Getting another rabbit, is this wise?

Question
Hi, i have a Giant French Lop Toto,(male) we have had him for almost 2 years, he is such a lovable chap, playful, loving, just lovely. I would love to get another Giant French Lop, but am thinking will the 2 get on together, if i get another male, will they fight, territory etc. A female would have to be neautered, but would they get on or would they fight too, and if they did get on together, would it change my Toto,s friendly personality towards me and the family, or would he still be the same friendly rabbit he is, any advice would be a great help.....thanking you Jill

Answer
Hi Jill. French Lops are adorable creatures and I too like them. Most are very sweet and laid back and I would like to say that you would not have any problem adding another one. However this may not be true. Your male may become VERY territorial if another male enters his domain. This could lead to some really bad fights and the possibility of serious damage to both rabbits. A female would be better accepted. Again though, neutering her is not going to stop Toto's sexual urges and your female would soon tire of constantly being harrassed which could lead to fighting. Or your male could constantly persue the new doe and pull her fur and bite her because she won't mate with him. If you decide to take on another rabbit I would be sure to get a return agreement so that you may return the rabbit if things don't work out. How much Toto's personality would change depends on how bonded he is to you and I really can not answer that. I do hope this turns out well if you decide to try it and I'm hoping for the best for you.   Pat
