QuestionMy husband is in the process of building some new hutches for our rabbits. We want hutches that we can clean out easily. We are wondering how to go about finding a rabbit-safe wood sealant for the inside of the hutches, something that we could hose down. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!
JP
AnswerDear Joy,
I wouldn't use any type of sealant, as these can contain potentially harmful petroleum derivitaves. Be sure not to use pressure-treated wood for the hutch, as this contains toxic heavy metals such as arsenic (which is why the wood looks greenish).
If the hutches will be indoors, it might be fine to just leave them untreated. Otherwise, the next best option might be to simply use marine spar varnish, let it cure *very* well before putting any bunnies in, and hope they don't chew the wood. Provide them with plenty of toys and entertainment, and this might not be a problem.
