Dwarf Rabbits and noises they make

Question
I have 3 rabbits, not sure what sex they are and around 5 months old, one has started to make crying noise and one thumps his/her back feet, they also have started to become more boisterous only when we move them into a portable pen. They are fine when they are in their hutch which also has a run attatched.

Should I be concerned

Answer
It sounds like you either have at least one pregnant rabbit or one that is getting hormonal and grumpy. Whining/crying noises are something a rabbit usually makes when they do not want to be messed with and are warning the other rabbit (or human) away. When a rabbit becomes pregnant, she generally will be a lot more touchy. They can also make a whining when they are wanting to get pregnant. They get very hormonal at this point, and they literally can whine about everything. :)

At 5 months old, males should have dropped their testicals. So you can turn them over to see if any of them have bald sacks on either side of the tail. Any that do are males, for sure. Any that don't are probably females, but it is slightly possible they are males that have not dropped yet. While the rabbit is upside-down, scissor the tail between your pointer and middle finger and gently pull the tail straight back away from the body. At the same time, take your thumb and put it just above the genitalia. Pull the skin back toward the body. The genitalia should pop out. If it sticks up tall it is a male. If it only stick up at one end but is attached at the base at the other end and has a slit, the rabbit is a female.

If you do have at least one male and at least one female, you will need to get the female(s) seperated and give them a nestbox. Rabbits have babies 28 to 32 days after being bred, but since you do not know they date they may have gotten bred, leave the box in for a full 33 days (in case she got bred the last day and goes a little late in having the babies). Keep the box clean as she may use it as a litterbox.
