Question
I am very sad to inform you that Silver and Daisy's happy marriage has come to a terrible end. While the bunnies were playing outside, my dogs escaped from the house. Before I could stop them, they killed Silver and had Daisy in one of their mouths. I got her out in time, and she is unhurt. That was yesterday, and she is eating and drinking. However, she just isn't herself. She ate some hay, but didn't throw it all over the place. She ate some food, but didn't dig in it and make a mess, and she didn't eat as much. She comes up to greet me in the cage, but then goes back into her corner. When I took her out into the bunny room to play, she hopped around, and then returned to her cage to sit. I know the signs of injury - she isn't breathing hard or sitting hunched up or grinding her teeth, and she walks fine. I introduced her first toilet paper roll, and she threw it around a little, then went back to sit in the corner. I don't know what to do! She seems so miserable, but I don't know what I can do to help her. Would a new rabbit be helpful to her? I don't really want another but if it could help her i would get one.
What advice can you give me to help get Daisy happy again?
Thanks,
Kaela

Answer
Dear Kaela,

I am sorry about this horrific tragedy.  This is why I will not allow dogs anywhere near my house.  They simply cannot be trusted.

The only way to help Daisy now is to (1) make sure this can never happen again, by locking the dogs up completely when the rabbits are out and (2) allowing Daisy to pick a new mate from one of the eligible bachelors at your local rabbit rescuer's foster home:

The people will ask you about your past rabbit history, and will need to be assured that the dogs can never do this again.  But Daisy really needs a new companion, and she will grieve badly for now.  She has been traumatized, and it would be a good idea to have a good rabbit vet check her over for any hidden injuries.

I am sorry.
