Corn & rabbits health

Question
Hi,

We fed our rabbit corn without realising the potential impact. He's had about 2 ears worth over the last month, and is now suffering from messy poop. Should we take him to the vet, or continue with his revised diet of hay & greens? Whilst his cecal matter is sloppy, he is still producing fecal matter.

Thanks for your help

Luke

Answer
If he is eating, drinking, and pooping as normal (other than it being sloppy, of course), continue with the revised diet. However, since he already has the runs, be very careful about the greens. Was he being fed greens before? If not, you really don't want to suddenly change his diet (other than removing the corn, of course). Plenty of hay and pellets might be the best course of action right now, unless he was already very used to greens. Once he is back to normal, you can slowly add in the greens and take out some of the pellets. Unless you are working closely with your vet to make sure your rabbit is getting the proper nutrients, I never recommend cutting out pellets entirely. An all fresh food and hay diet can be done, but it can be difficult to provide just the right nutrients without close monitoring by both yourself and a vet.
