Question
My bunny mitzie is about 3 months old and she will not sleep through the night. Every morning around 6AM she start biting her cage and "super jumping" into the sides of it. It is really loud and obnoxious, also im not an expert but i think the cage biting might have something to do with her teeth so i bought her sticks that she could chew on from the pet store they seem to be a temporary fix but than she seems to get bored of them and begin chomping on the cage again. So to try and solve the problem i let her out of the cage and she runs laps for about 15 minutes around the room knocking everything over and running over us while we're sleeping. She scratches, and it's kinda painful. Please help
P.S. This is my first experience with rabbits so this may be normal but any advice at all is appreicated thank you.

Answer
Hi Chris,

well, rabbits do rattle their cages for attention or when they want food or when they want to come out.  this is probably part of the behavior.

The other part may be that Mitzi is hitting sexual maturity and this could be part of the behavior as well.  Soon you will need to consider getting her spayed.  This will also extend her life, as most female rabbits who aren't fixed by 5 get uterine cancer and die prematurely (they can live 10-12 years).

If there is a way to give her her own room, or a part of a room outside of yours, she could rattle and not disturb you so much.  Sometimes they just need to get energy out.  from our guys usually cage chomping or gate chomping is either for attention or they want out.  Sometimes you just have to let them chomp because after all, you are the alpha bunny, not them.

I'd recommend going to the House Rabbit Society web site (www.rabbit.org) and looking through their articles on behavior.  I'd also look up a good rabbit vet in your area for spaying your girl.
