rabbit fur and hay in mouth

Question
Our female rabbit was sitting in her cage today with a big
clump of fur,hay and shavings in her mouth. She sat for ages
like that and only moved when we moved her out of the cage.
She seems ok and is still eating and running around.Should we
be worried by this or is this behaviour normal ?

Answer
Dear Susan,

It sounds as if she's trying to build a nest, and so may be having a false pregnancy.  That means it's time for her to be spayed, as unspayed female rabbits have a very high risk of uterine cancer.  Please see:

www.rabbit.org/health/spay.html

and find a rabbit vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

who can give her a full wellness exam beforehand.

I hope this helps.
