Question
Hi,
I have had two female rabbits together for a while and they get along just fine. I mated both of them with the same buck but only one of them took him well. I have placed them back together and the male seperate, will I be able to leave the 2 females together when the pregnant one gives birth? and If for some reason that the other female did get pregnant can they both be in the same hutch together and just place 2 nesting boxes in when it is time? Are the nesting boxes a must if they have a hay burrow built into the hutch?

Answer
Cheryl, this depends on your does.  Some does get along really well and even nurse each others kits and there is never a problem.  Some does become very territorial when they have kits and will fight like mad any other rabbit even near and will kill the others kits.  I suggest that you separate the two does at about day 28 - just in case.  Then you can put them together with the nests as far apart as possible and be there to see what happens.  They need separate nests - the "burrow " in the hutch - tho more "natural" is not really clean, and after a birth even more so.  You need to be able to check the nest every day to make sure here is not a dead kit in there or that the doe has not peeded in it - thus wetting the kits.  Some does deliver and you will not see a speck of blood, some, particularly first time mammas can make a bloody mess and the nest is wet and contaminated - then you need to change all the nest material.  Here, since it is now cold, I put a thick layer of newspaper, lots of dry nesting material with a few handfuls of wood shavings, along with the does pulled fur - mix it all up and make a indentation in it - add kits and cover with a bit of the mixed material.  The nest should not be large - only as large as the doe sitting up - other wise she will want to lay in the nest an will squish the kits and poop there.
Good luck !
