Bunny eating litter

Question
Hi Lee,
I adopted a gorgeous gray angora from the SPCA a few days ago that was rescued from horrific conditions.  He is doing fabulous now and we love him so.  I have a litter box outside his cage and leave the cage door open for him to hop in/out and around the mud room area that is safe for him. He is going in the litter box (yeah!), but he is also eating the litter. I use natural wheat litter and not sure if it may hurt him or if this is a natural thing.
Thanks - CJ

Answer
Hi CJ,

I would not use the wheat litter.  It is not good for him to be eating it.  There are parts of it that can cause a blockage and it is also higher in calories and can pose an obesity issue for him.

A better and possibly less expensive alternative is hardwood wood stove fuel pellets.  They are compressed sawdust pellets.  They are safe, cheap and break down easy so you can see what needs removing and replacing.  The wood also neutralizes some of the urine odor.  It is bunny safe.
