Question
Hi,
Is rabbits poo harmful to humans?
I have a Lovely british giant x lionhead rabbit and he's 11 months old.
He poo's a lot and as he's in and out of the garden all day he does it everywhere.
I clear up as much as i can but as my children (2 & 4 years old) also use the garden to play is it harmful to them?
Many thanks
Hayley

Answer
Hi Hayley,

unless your rabbit has parasites in their gi tracts, rabbit fecal pellets are the safest types of waste of any pet you can have.  It is 95% hay (if you are feeding them a proper diet).  It is so safe, you can put it directly into your garden to fertilize plants and flowers without having to compost it.  Further, it has no smell save for what their scent glands may put on them.

If you want to be sure your rabbit doesn't have anything harmful to him (or you), you can take a number of his fecal pellets in to your rabbit vet for testing.  They will rule out any parasites, etc. doing general testing on it.
