Question
Hi Dana,
Sorry I didn't continue this off of the last question, but I couldn't find it.  Anyways thanks for your previous help but I need more that will help save his life if it works.  Anyways, to rebrief you he now hasn't gone poo in more than 48hrs.  We took him to a vet today and he does have GI stasis.  They also found he was very dehydrated.  They gave him a pain shot, a shot to help get his poo moving, and hydration shots.  They told us to grind and soften pellets and force feed him (which I have).  Plus, I've been giving him water and pineapple juice through a syringe.  He doesn't look to good.  He is just laying in his cage in the corner under his liter box and that's all.  He is bloated horribly.
I can tell he is in pain.  Do you think more pain killers would help him get through this while he is in that much pain.  I hear gas in his stomach though.  I don't know if I should continue feeding him even if he isn't going poo.  What do you recommend i do? Should I massage his belly?  What about force feeding him liquid hay, spinach, brocolli, etc.  How much water should he be drinking a day?  How much pineapple juice should I give him, if any?  As you can tell I really need help on how I can help him recover best.  The two medications I am giving him in a syringe 3 times a day are Metoclopramide HCL Syrup (5 mg) and Bene-Bac Pet Gel.  I really need help.  I'm desperate and scared!  Please get back to me ASAP on what I can do!
Thank You So Much For Your Help,
Nicole K.

Answer
Dear Nicole,

If his abdomen is hard and bloated, you may have very limited time to try to save him--if it's even possible.  A true bloat is nearly always fatal.  But if it is NOT a true bloat, he may still have a chance with abdominal massage and gas medication.

If the abdomen is hard and bloated, get him to the vet IMMEDIATELY.  His only chance of survival is for the vet to pass a gastric tube into the stomach and try to draw out some of the liquid building up and pinching off the sharp turn of the intestine just caudal to the pylorus.

Turning the bunny to lie on his left side also can help, but if the stomach is already bloating, it will be too late for this to work.

Please get him to the vet NOW, if he is to survive.

I hope it's not too late.  Please let me know how it goes.

Dana
