Question
Our rabbit has had jaw abcesses for about 4 months. The vet has been draining and flushing them.He has had countless surgeries and had been treated with Manuka Honey. We took him the other day and she said they were spreading and if it were her she would put him to sleep.I havent told the kids yet the seriosness of it. Do you have any advice on what i should do.

Answer
Hello,

I am not trying to doubt your veterinarian's ability, but I would first take the rabbit to another veterinarian for a second opinion. Pets truly become members of the family and this is too serious of a situation to act on only one person's advise.

Beyond that, I cannot really tell you what I believe should be done. I have not examined the rabbit and I do not know the full medical history the way your veterinarian does. I feel comfortable saying that I can tell you are a very concerned owner and will do what is best for this animal.

I'm going to include a link that deals specifically with euthanasia of rabbits: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze27h5b/id34.html

Here is also a link regarding explaining the process to children:

Feel free to ask any additional questions if needed. I'm terribly sorry you are in such a tough situation.
