High Jumpers

Question
I found my male Jersey Wooley resting on top of a box around 3' high.  The box was in a pen and taller than the pen.  Do you think he jumped up there or did he climb up between the box and pen. He would have had to jump the whole distance. Obviously he could have jumped down an excape as the pen was outdoor. Guess he likes it up high.

Answer
Dear Tom,

Lots of bunnies like to be up high, and a three foot jump upwards is trivial for a small, muscular bunny.  They can also cover quite a distance horizontally, but without seeing the setup, I can't guess whether he just jumped, just climbed, or both.

Whatever he did, it's time to be sure you provide firm traction for him wherever he is.  A bunny who's a jumper needs firm footing in order not to slip and miss his mark with disastrous results.  (I know someone who's bunny just broke a hind leg, requiring amputation, from just such a jump!).

So provide him with secure places to jump and climb, and make sure there's plenty of soft padding to catch him if he falls, and he should be fine.

Hope that helps.
