Question
I have a rescued white rabbit (so I don't know how old), with gray ears, nose and feet and blue eyes. He has a crusty black-like growth right below the base of one ear, about 3/8 inch in diameter, and it protrudes off the skin also about 3/8 of an inch. He scratches it every so often with his back foot, causing it to bleed.  Do you know what this might be and how it should be treated?  He is eating and drinking fine, does not appear to be in pain. Pretty much his normal bun self.
Thanks!

Answer
Dear Donna,

It could be a little spot of mange, or a papilloma (wart), but I'd want a good rabbit vet to have a look to be sure it's not a little skin cancer that should be removed before it has a chance to spread.  If the area is raised and pigmented, then I'd do this as soon as possible.  You can find a good rabbit vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

who can diagnose the lesion in person (which I can't), and prescribe treatment, as necessary.

Hope this helps.

Dana
