My bunnies ate pear seeds!

Question
I recently rescued two rabbits, they are outdoors in a bunny mansion, happy as can be. I thought I knew about diet quite well, but just yesterday, I fed them a pear, 1 between the two of them, and today I was making sure I knew what was poisonous and not and found that they should not ever eat pear seeds! Ahhhhh have I poisoned my New bunnies!?
They seem to be in good health, not acting strangely, or sick, they still have  good appetites and are happy and lovey....should I just keep a close eye and hope I have not poisoned them, or bring them to a vet right away?

Answer
Tobi,

Many apple and pear fruits have low levels of cyanide in their tissues, though it is most highly concentrated in the seeds.  The level of cyanide in the seeds will vary, depending on where the trees are grown, soil content, climate, etc.

Cyanide content in apple/pear seeds is usually quite low (if it's present at all), but many people prefer to err on the side of caution and not feed fresh apple or pear to their bunnies.

If they ate the fruit yesterday and are still acting normal today and eating and drinking well, you should already be in the clear.  A rabbit's digestive system works quickly and the seeds would already be metabolized and causing problems by now if they were going to.  Just err on the side of caution from now on, and make sure to slice any apples or pears you're going to give them and remove the seeds and stems first.  Please remember to never feed iceberg lettuce to your bunnies either, many people do not know that this kind of lettuce can cause a deadly diarrheal condition known as scours that is very difficult to treat.  Best wishes!
