Sore Toe Nail

Question
Hi,
I think that my bunny has hurt his toe nail. I had a look last night as he was acting strangely and there was some blood between two of his toes and the base of one of the nails is quite swollen and tender. They were quite long and I'm guessing that it may have gotten caught. He is eating fine and seems in good enough spirits but is very hesitant to put any weight on his back foot and is obviously uncomfortable. I have cleaned it off with diluted iodine but not sure if I should be doing anything else? Is this common and should I be getting him to the vet?

Answer
Hi,

since he is trying to keep weight off it, I would suggest having your regular, good rabbit vet examine what exactly happened to the foot and toes.  Blood is not good, the chance of infection being what it is.  You don't want anything to go septic.

Please get him in as soon as physically possible.  Teh vet can also give pain meds for him as well (like metacam) that you can give over a couple days, orally, to make sure he's not in any kind of pain that makes him not want to move to eat and drink.
