treating ringworm in rabbits

Question
I asked you this question in 2006, and am still having the same problem.  Two of my bunnies have tested positive for ringworm.  they have been getting lime sulfur dips diluted down to a special formula by my vet on a weekly regimen.  They have been treated now for eight weeks and still has abnormally dry, broken hair with white dandruff like flakes attached, and hairless areas at a central point within a circular lesions.I clean their bronze coated pens, litterboxes and dishes with a ten per cent bleach  solution daily. Their bedding is freshly washed and the floor is also mopped daily with the same bleach solution.  I have six other bunnies in this very large room.  All are in quarantine for now. I change their bedding almost everyday, sweep, change litter and give fresh water daily.  It is not possible to bleach every other healthy bunny pen daily. Can you please help me to help my bunnies? I would like to find good homes for the healthy bunnies, and i know that would help but it takes a long time to find homes.   I did read that a spray called Benzarid is good for treating fungus in the environment.  I also switched the bedding from fleece blankets to newsprint for the affected ones.  The wired bottom cages are so uncomfortable for them. Is grisofulvin a viable choice?  Does Program show real results?  Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer
Dear Lynne,

First of all, has the ringworm been confirmed via culture or skin biopsy?  It's important to know for sure what you're fighting, as signs like this could also be due to bacterial infection or the even nastier condition, sebaceous adenitis (an autoimmune condition).

I know of people who have used grisofulvin and Program, so both of those would be options to try if the lime-sulfur dip is not working.  We also have had good success with topical application of clotrimazole cream.  You need to really work it into the affected areas and treat twice a day, since these dermatophytes can be very stubborn and hard to kill.

I hope a combination of treatments will help your bunnies get well.
