Rabbits behaviour

Question
Hi lee

My pet rabbit of 5 years old has been so sweet and loving for the past few weeks. He is very familiar with my usual cleaning routine every morning and he will usually sit and wait for me to finish with the cleaning and ask me for pats.

Today for some unknown reason to me, he leapt and bite my leg when I was doing cleaning. It was nothing unusual but I observed this morning when I greeted him he seem uneasy and run away very quickly after eating my treats.  Then when I replenish the hay rack, he suddenly charged and bite me.

So sad.  Why does he behave this way?  Is there anything to do with health issues?  Like not feeling well or something? He eats the treats and pellets this morning.

Pls advise. Thanks

Answer
Hi, you will have to write back with more information that I will ask you for.

What has changed in the past couple of days around the house?  Anything new?  Did you change the room he's in at all?  Move him to a new room?  Change cages?

Do you smell different?  Wearing perfume?  Is someone new in the house that you have their smell on you?  Did you start smoking?  Do you have a new piece of jewelry on your wrist/hand area?

What may have occurred during the night that in the morning he was uneasy around you?  Storm?  weird sounds?  Someone else staying in the house that may have scared him?

Many rabbits get scared when a familiar person is around them with a strange scent on them.  One of my guys gets frightened of me after I have been cooking anything with meat in the kitchen and I have that smell on my hands (even after several handwashings).  If you started smoking or are hanging around with someone who smokes, this may be freaking him out because either he's had bad past experiences with other humans who smoked, or is regarding you as a stranger because of the new smell on you.

Write back if you can.  Rabbits react to things, they don't just start changing behavior.  You have to start listing things that were going on before the behavior change to determine what event or events are the cause of it.
