Flying with Rabbit

Question
I have an 8 year old dwarf albino rabbit who is in very good health and I wanted to take him on a flight from Chicago to New York.  He would be in the cabin with me, but I am concerned in that he has never flown and I don't want him to be too uncomfortable.  Could you give me some advice on how to make this trip as comfortable as possible for him?  Also should I take him to the vet immediately prior to have any particular tests done to make sure he is O.K. to fly?

Thank You,

Gina

Answer
Dear Gina,

A wellness exam before travel is never a bad idea, so I'd recommend that so you can get a health certificate, just in case anyone asks for it.  Note that not all airlines accept rabbits in the cabin, so make sure your airline does.

Most airlines sell pet carriers that fit under the seat in front of you, and you'll need one of those.  Line the bottom with a soft towel and under that put some pelleted sawdust litter that will absorb any urine and odor, should he pee (which he probably won't).  Bring a ziplock back of fresh, wet leafy greens and treats, and give them to him periodically so he won't feel thirsty or hungry.  Also provide those for him on take-of and close to landing so he'll swallow and unconsciously equalize any pressure in his ears that might make him uncomfortable.

The flight you're making is pretty short, so it probably won't be a big deal for him.  I've flown with rabbits in the cabin many times, and none have ever had a bad trip.

Good luck!  Hope this helps.
