First time rabbit owner

Question
Hi Dan. Recently, my mom and I have been thinking about getting a pet rabbit for an addition our family. (I'm 16 years old) We've never owned one before, and we're curious about the basic needs for a rabbit and some other things we might need to know about owning one. Also, for a first time owner, what breed of rabbit would you suggest? I'm not interested in becoming a breeder or anything fancy like that, just a good family pet. Thanks! =]

Answer
Hello Haley!
Well I am glad you are getting all the info you need before you get a rabbit.
#1 A small breed rabbit would be better due to housing size if you keep in inside. some small breeds are Polish, Holland lops, and Netherland dwarfs. research them and see which one you would like .
You should get a doe because bucks tend to be more messy when they spray to mark their territory.
rabbits need a complete feed like you would get at a feed store or Walmart. 14-15% protein is good and plenty of fresh clean water.
You can also give treats like carrots or store treats they sell just for rabbits. Alfalfa cubes are good they play with them and also can eat them. small blocks of hardwood is another good toy for the rabbits.
Keep their cage clean unless you get a hutch with wire floors they make it easier to clean out the tray.
go to www.arba.net and click on the breeds link and you will see pics of all different breeds and most have a link to the speciality club which has lots of info about that breed of rabbit.
Good luck
Dan
