Question
Hi!
I have 3 rabbits living outside in a completely safe fenced and secured area for 2 years now. I wanted to know if they were to have mites, which I don't think they do because I check regularly, would the mites die in the winter? I live in canada, our winters get to below 0. I have winterized housing and tons of timothy hay and straw inside. So I worry that they might get mites or fleas, and if they would die off in the cold? I never had a problem so far,but I read a website that scared me into thinking they would get these mites.
Thanks,,Libby

Answer
Hi Libby,

Mites and fleas do not die off in the winter. If you are worried about fur mites you could do a preventative treatment with Ivermectin a couple of times a year. The dose is .1cc per pound and can be given topically or orally.

There are also ear mites and burrowing mites (mange) to think about.
You can buy ear mite medication at pet stores and farm supply stores.
I believe that Ivermectin can be injected under the skin to treat mange.
Not sure on the doses to treat ear and burrowing mites.
If you suspect either of these, you should consult your veterinarian.
