Dutch rabbits - outdoor hutches

Question
I would like confirmation of how to care for Dutch rabbits in the winter.  We moved 2 Dutch rabbits outdoors about two months ago.  With the weather getting colder (will get well below freezing) we are concerned as to how to ensure they do not freeze.  We have provided them with an enclosed sleeping quarter filled with straw, and are considering boarding up the sides to completely enclose the hutch for the winter months.  They were previously indoors so have been litter box trained--so have considered closing off the bottom as well.  However, I would think they still need the ventilation.  Will we need to provide more insulation and / or some type of heating devise?  What can we provide them with that they won't ingest.  Also, how do we give them water when they are used to drinking from a bottle with the metal dispenser ("straw")?

Answer
Hello Laurie.
well you have a good question !
Where are you located? does it get below 0 for many days ?
Normally Rabbits are well suited for winter cold they can handle 0 degrees pretty well if they are protected from the wind and are kept dry.  Straw is a good insulation. you will need to provide a way for the rabbits to get sun light during the day so I would not totally block off the hutch. as long as they are out of the wind they will be fine. if you feel like they need more protection I would cover the entire hutch with a canvas tarp or an old sleeping bag during the night this will keep them draft free and protect them for rain and snow. just oncover during the day.
you could get a water bowl at walmart for them during the winter they will drink from it and its eaiser to remove the ice.
good luck Dan
