elevated litter box?

Question
Hello, our rabbit has taken to using our two couches and our bed as a litter box. I can't re-arrange my furniture and put a box where the bed and couches are. But is the rabbit trying to tell me she/he would rather have an elevated box? I have not found any other consistent places where she goes. Just in her cage - both in and out of the box in the cage - and on the furniture. So should I build/buy some sort of platform? Should I disguise it as a sofa? And I don't believe I ever really seen this rabbit make the leap from floor to sofa. It's a young rabbit. Can he really be jumping up there? So if I build a platform I suppose I should have a landing zone. Like a heli-port, I'll put a big X on the touch-down spot.

Thanks.

Answer
Dear Kim,

It's not the elevation of the litterbox and bed. It's your scent.  Your bunny is marking the areas where he smells you (his clan and family) so that he's part of the picture, too.

The only way to keep this from becoming a permanent problem is to put things on top of the bed and couch that will keep him off until he can be neutered and re-trained to his litterboxes.  Please read:

and

http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/litter.html

for help with these aspects of the problem.

If you can't put things on the couch/bed to stop him, then at least you can stop the damage by draping the areas with 100% cotton, rubber-backed mats (Marshall's usually has a good, cheap selection) that will absorb the pee and can be washed (get several and rotate) so he doesn't keep smelling his scent and coming back to reinforce it.  White vinegar will help remove the pee smell that's already there.

I hope this helps.
