sore on rabbit

Question
I have a neutered white lop ear rabbit that is about 5 years old and I have had her for about 3 years and she is a indoor pet and has always been indoors and recently I noticed that she has a bright red sore about the size of a quarter on her right shoulder area just below her neck on top of her back and the fur is missing and it looks extremely sore. What could this possibly be?

Answer
Dear Katie,

Without seeing the lesion in person, I cannot tell you for sure what it is.  But the location and severe irritation suggest that she might be licking at the area and making it raw.  You don't mention whether she has a companion rabbit that is *not* spayed, but if she does, then my other guess would be that her pal is mounting her and biting her on the shoulders, which is normal behavior--but painful!

If you're not sure what this is, then I'd strongly recommend that you get her to a good rabbit vet:

who can examine the sore in person, determine what's causing it, and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Hope this helps.
