QuestionMy rabbit has had dandruff problems for a while now. He has it towards the end of his back(bottom) and nowhere else. I tried looking to see if it were mites but the symptoms don't match. He has healthy, normal skin every where else. He is shedding quite a bit where he has the dandruff but not in excess. He's just a rabbit that sheds a lot.
please help me
(Does any of this have to do with his diet?)
thanks for your time
AnswerDear Meagan,
You won't be able to see them, but I'm about 99% certain that the problem your bunny has is being caused by fur mites (Cheletiella sp.). You can't see them without a microscope, but the symptoms and location of the problem are a real givaway. You cna read more about this here:
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html
The best way to treat the problem is with Revolution (selamectin) from your trusted rabbit veterinarian. If you don't already have a rabbit vet, you can find one here:
www.rabbit.org/vets
I hope the vet will agree to try Revolution even if s/he cannot visualize the mites. They're in there--just notoriously hard to find. I'm betting that Revolution will solve the problem in just a week or two. (DO NOT use Frontline, as it can be deadly to rabbits).
I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any other questions.
