Strange Litter Habbits

Question
Hi Elizabeth...

I'm in a situation with my dwarf lionhead bunny Georgie and i'm not sure of how to tackle it...i hope you can help!!!

I've had Georgie for just over a year, he is about 14 months old (he is wonderful!).  Litter training Georgie was very easy, he started using the tray in his cage from day 1 and he never wee'd around the living room area - he always hopped back to his cage.

When he was about 4 months old, he started weeing on me quite often so we decided it was time to get him neutered, that was about a year ago.

After that, he returned to his good habbits.  About 6 months ago Georgie let us know that a certain corner of the living room would be a nice toilet, so we purchased another litter tray and placed it there, he adapted immediately.  We had a few little accidents but after putting some hay in the corner for him he got it.

When i set up the 2nd litter tray, i put it on a spare carpet tile on top of the carpet just in case of spillages.  About 4 months ago, Georgie suffered a bladder infection and had bladder sludge.  It was a difficult time for him and he did lose his litter habits for a while.

After antibiotic treatment, Georgie again returned to his good habits, but this past month he has decided that the carpet tile is a better toilet than the tray! So he sits on the carpet tile, eating the hay from his tray, and weeing on the carpet tile.

I nervous of using stain removal on the tile because of the fumes.  Today i have tried replacing the tile with a waterproof sheet, but then his feet get all wet and he rubs them over the carpet...I have just ordered a pack of Pubby Training Pads online as i think they would be more hygenic...but ideally i'd like to try and get Georgie back to his good habbits.  I hope i havnt let him establish too much of a habit.

I've had a look at Georgie's wee, its a bit dark, but certainly not sludgy and the colour does vary a bit throughout the day anyway so it looks pretty normal.  I run my business from home so i'm here all day and like Georgie to be out with me, but at the moment i'm spending all of my tim running to the litter area to mop up!!  I never really had to litter train him the first time round because he adapted so well, so i dont know what to do?  All of the articles i've read say; extra litter trays, put hay in the tray, but i have all this set up...he's in the right location, but just cant seem to move an extra few inches across.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks so much in advance, Joanne

Answer
Hi Joanne,
I know what it's like...  :)   Try using some woodchips in the tray,he won't be tempted to eat them, and will soon learn to pee instead of sit there and eat in the toilette!
You can empty out the litter tray once a day instead of running back and forth all day..also absorbs odor.(only use pine shavings)
Also, you can try a larger tray. Once a rabbit likes a place to pee they don't really change their mind.  Putting a larger tray so he hops right into, and out of should help with your mess.   Try this, hope it all works out for you...Elizabeth
