Question
Hi, i have 2 rabbits one is almost 7 years old (the male who is a dwarf mix) and the other just turned 6 months (the female who is a rex mix) ive kept them both in seperate cages for the past 6 months and i let them out today to breed and the female would hop away every time the male got close and tried to mount her. Why is this happening, does the female just not like the male?

And also about how long is a dwarfs lifespan?

thank you!!

Answer
The female is probably just not be ready to breed.

However, I would advise against breeding them anyway. You state that one is a dwarf mix and one is a rex mix. That means  that you probably do not have a good knowledge of their genetic background. It is quite possible that the two rabbits may be hiding some bad genes that can cause problems in their babies. Crooked teeth (which need to be trimmed for the rest of their life), seizures, spinal problems, genetics that cause babies to die shortly after birth, twisted legs, and eyes open at birth that are very succeptable to disease, are just a handful of things that can be passed on from the parents to the babies. Without knowing their genetic background, you would have no idea if they carry some of these serious genetic problems.

All rabbits can live 10+ years if well taken care of. Their lifespan is often increased by having them spayed or neutered, too, as it prevents all chance of uterine, overian, or testicular cancer.
