Rabbit humping...

Question

sleeping together
I have a rabbit of about 15 weeks, and recently bought a friend for him, another lionhead rabbit who is about 9 weeks. They seemed to like each other, licking each others ears, eyes, nose and sleeping with each other. However, the older rabbit has been humping the younger one, I am concerned that it is hurting him. I cannot afford to neuter my bunnies at the time being, however I do plan on getting them fixed. Will this stop? Also, are they old enough to be neutered? I don't want my little bun to be hurting, and if he is would I be able to tell? There are no noises being made by him, just the older one. A soft honking/purring noise... Help!

Answer
Dear Megan,

If you're not sure of the sexes of the bunnies, then you're playing with fire.  A rabbit can be fertile as young as 12 weeks (male), and female fertility is unpredictable.  Unless the bunnies are neutered, this behavior will escalate.  It won't go away.

If the little bunny isn't running away or objecting, then it's possible that the older one isn't a "pincher" who grabs onto the neck when mounting.  this is more likely to foment battle than just mounting.  That would even buy you some time.

Please read:

If the 15 week old male has descended testicles (likely), then he is old enough to be neutered.  If the baby isn't female, then this might not be an emergency unless the baby starts to object when he reaches early puberty (in a few weeks), and fights could ensue, ruining what has started out to be a lovely bond.

So I'd try to scrape up some pennies and get both bunnies to a good, experienced rabbit vet who will work out a payment plan to help you prevent disaster.

Hope this helps.
