rabbit broken front leg

Question
I took my 7 month old rabbit to the Vet's today to have her spade.  The office phoned to tell me that she broke her front leg while on the table as they were prepping her for the operation.  I am not sure how this happened or what really happened.  I always had faith in my vet.  She specializes in exotics.  She has taken the rabbit to her home to spend the night and moniter her pain medication etc.  I know the doctor feels awful about this.  How will my rabbit recover?  Will she lead a normal healthy life?  Sable, my beautiful little rabbit was a perfectly healthy rabbit when she went to the Vets'.  What can I expect now regarding her health?
Thank You for your consideration.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Heart broken,
Kristin

Answer
The most likely guess is she jumped out of someone's arms or off the table while being prepped for her spay, but that is just a guess.

Certainly a good vet will take an animal home to monitor it overnight.  She will be in pain from the spay, and will likely have to have additional pain meds for the broken leg.

I have known several rabbits who had broken legs, the younger ones seem to heal faster.  The youngest one was about 2 months old, and after hers healed you could never tell it was broken.

Since it was caught and treated quickly, the healing is going to be the longest part.  You will have to keep her from trying to jump up and down while she has on a cast.  You may need to restrict her to a cage or pen for some period of time.  She will not like this, but it is necessary if the bone is to heal properly.  Once she heals, no one should ever be able to tell she was ever injured.
