Question
My rabbit has had some problems lately.  A few weeks ago I noticed that he was salivating accesively.  It has gotten worse and I also noticed that he is chewing all the time.  He is not reacting when I clean under his chin but he will not let me look in his mouth.  The sacreation is clear so I dont know if its an infection or has his front teeth gotten too long?
Could it be soething else?  If you could give me some sigjestions that would be great.  Also,  he is still eating as normal but he will not eal carrots or and vegies. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Respiratory infections, tooth problems, and abscesses can all cause drooling.

The front teeth are not the only ones that can have problems, actually. He may have a tooth spur further back in the mouth.

Use a circular motion to feel all around his head, jaws, and neck to make sure there are no swellings.

Also check his nose for any signs of mucus being expelled. Check the inside of the paws for matted fur or crusty material (rabbits with runny noses will wipe their noses on their paws). Check the eyes to make sure they are clear and have no discharge.

I would definitely suggest getting him to a good rabbit vet. No matter what the cause, all can be life threatening to some degree. Tooth spurs can get bad enough that he will stop eating and either starve himself or just get gastrointestinal stasis from not eating for a day or two (which can be just as fatal as starving). Respiratory infections and abscesses are nothing to fool around with either, and they can be even swifter killers.
