Pooper Scooper

Question
I wonder if you have any suggestions for a good pooper scooper for my bunny's litter box. I bought an actual bunny one but it takes both the litter and poop. I try to clean their box out on a daily basis but it ends up taking most of the litter out and I end up just throwin it all out and refilling and that in the long run is not very cost effecient. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi,

pet supply stores have a variety of scoopers.  I prefer larger ones that are solid, no venting in them.  They might not even be listed as waste scoopers, they might be scoopers that are used for (for example) scooping dry dog food out of a bag.  So they might have scoopers in different areas for different things, but who says they have to be used for what they say on the label?

I'd also say change your litter, if you're not using hardwood wood stove fuel pellets.  These are compressed hardwood sawdust pellets that stores like Menards, Fleet Farm, Home Depot, True Value, etc, carry for people to burn in special wood pellet stoves to heat their homes.  They make EXCELLENT, SAFE, CHEAP litter for rabbits.  They do a great job with urine, they absorb it and break down into sawdust.  You can easily see what needs to be removed, scoop it out, and replace with a little fresh pellets and you're good.  The hardwood also reduces odor a little as well.  But it doesn't give off any dangerous fumes or anything.  And rabbits if they eat it (which i haven't seen yet) is fine because rabbits eat wood/bark anyway.

you can sift the litterbox and most of the fecal pellets (being lighter than the wood pellets) will be sorted up to one side of the litter pan and you can scoop those out there as well.
