Question
hi there.i noticed my 5year old female rabbit was loosing weight,so took her to the vets a week ago.the vet said she has a tumour , i was just wondering if anything can be done ,like surgery? i am just so upset....  thanks..

Answer
Dear Jackie,

Whether the tumor is operable depends on where it is, and what type of tumor it is.  Unless you can give me more information, I can't really guess about that.

If this is a uterine tumor, spaying her will remove the cancer, and unless it has metastasized (most common location is to the lungs), this could effect a cure.  So please find a rabbit-savvy vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and find out more about exactly what the tumor is, and the vet will be able to tell you whether she can be treated.  But it's critical that you see a vet who is an expert in rabbit medicine; a vet who sees mostly cats and dogs often won't value a rabbit enough to bother.  :(

I hope this helps.
