Question
Hi there

For the past 15 hours my 1 year old male bunny has been acting very strange.  He is very very lathargic.  I put him to bed last night and he sat in his litter tray and sprawled his paws out in front (like he couldn't be bothered to sit upright), we took him back in the lounge for attention and gave him some water.  when we took him back to bed he did the same thing and remained like that for 2-3 hours.  then for the next few hours he was out of his litter tray but i could tell he was very uncomfy as he couldnt keep still for more than 20 seconds.  He has had many small wees outside his box, and little in the way of poos, yet before the 15 hours ago he was eating, drinking and acting very normal.  He now rufuses food and treats too which is very unusual for him. His tummy is very bloated. He felt quite cold this morning too but was lying next to a doorway. I have taken him to the vet this morning and he is currently waiting an xray.  the vet was very negative and said it is possible its a twisted intestine and if it was nothing could be done.  i wanted to know if there is anything that can be done please, money is no issue, i would pay anything to keep him alive, he's my world.Thanks.

Answer
Dear Zoe,

Please get your bunny to a more rabbit-savvy vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

immediately.  This is an extreme emergency. If it is a true bloat, then there may be nothing to be done but emergency surgery if it has gone on this long.  But if it is a TRUE bloat (i.e., the abdomen is very, very hard and stiff, and the bunny is in extreme pain), this could be fatal.

Please also read:

for emergency procedures if this is *not* a bloat.  I hope this will help until you can get him to a rabbit-savvy vet.
