Two Netherland Dwarf Females Fur licking

Question
6 months old, lived together since birth, speyed.
Winter fur coming out, combs out oK. They have always licked each other, recently though one is licking fur off (taking off) nose of other rabbit, down to bare pink skin, why ?
The other rabbit does not object to this, just a bit worrying as there is now a line of pink skin about 5mm above nose, on both rabbits, but only down to skin on one, approx 2mm wide. No sign of parasites.

Answer
She is probably over-grooming or officially called barbering.  Some people will put apple bitter spray on the area's that are being over-groomed.  If it is near her eyes then don't spray it on there.  Just spray a bit in your hands and place a dab on the affected area.  Unless you want to permanently separate them there isn't a whole lot you can do.  Since they aren't show rabbits and the skin isn't wide open which can cause infection, its not to much of a concern.  If the skin is open you can put some anti-biotic cream on the area but you would need to keep her away from the other rabbit while the cream is setting in.

Some rabbits do this for no reason what-so-ever.  You do want to make sure they have plenty of toys and other things to occupy their time.  Sometimes it is just a nervous habit.  You can also try separating them for a while while you aren't home and keep an eye on them when you are.

One other thing to consider since they are both molting and obviously licking excessive hair is to make sure they have plenty of timothy hay so they don't get a hairball.  You can also give them a papaya pill.  I give all my rabbits 3 papaya pills a week when they are molting to help prevent hair balls.

Let me know if you need help finding apple bitter spray or anything else.  I buy the apple bitter spray made for ferrets and it is completely safe.

Thank you
