Lumps at base of lop rabbits ears

22 10:01:27

Question
I just recently noticed a grape sized lump at the base my lop earred rabbit's ears. It is the same on each side, which makes me think it's probably not an abcess or tumor. However, I've never noticed this before and am wondering if it's part of normal anatomy or something I need to have seen by a vet. The consistency is squishy, kind of like an eyeball...but softer. They are directly at the base of her ears...on her face. Does anyone have experience with this? Is this normal? I hate to take her to the vet only to be told that it's a normal part of rabbit anatomy! She isn't acting sick at all, is eating and drinking well.
Thanks.
Karen

Answer
Dear Karen,

Even though the lumps are symmetrical, it could be a sign of middle ear infection, which is particularly common in lops.  I would get bun to an experienced rabbit vet:

These could be abscesses, and need treatment before they develop into something worse, such as torticollis:

I hope this helps.
