Bunny leg injury

Question
My bunny is 9 years old and he has experienced severe trauma to his right leg.  One week ago my two year old came around the corner and accidently tripped over him injuring his leg.  We went to the vet immediately and had xrays done.  The vet told me that he had no broken bones just severe muscle trauma.  His leg no longer feels aligned correctly to me and the thigh is quite swollen, almost like a big knot.  One week later he is still not putting any weight on his let, it still seems swollen and just as misaligned as it was a week ago.  He is eating and drinking but not moving about his cage or the house when he is out, not even using his litter box.  His leg quivers when you lift him up.  I am taking him in again this monday but am wondering if I am torturing him with pain or if this typically does have a chance of healing properly. Any opinion is appreciate because I am driving myself crazy and now questioning my vet's original diagnosis

Answer
Dear Tania,

I would get your bunny to a more experienced rabbit vet:

It's possible that there was hemorrhaging, and he might need medication to help with reducing inflammation.  You might also ask about warm compresses and gentle massage.  It's not normal for you to feel misalignment, and it's possible there is a dislocation.  The swelling also sounds excessive, though I can't see it to judge.

But after this amount of time, you should start to see improvement, not things getting worse.  So I'd recommend another vet for more complete diagnostics, and *at least* some pain medication, such as metacam, until you find out what's really going on.

Hope this helps.
