sinus bunny again

Question
Hi Doctor,
I took Fritz to the vet to have his teeth trimmed, they were very long, and he was doing much better... not sure if u remember, but I am the one always writing about Fritz, my dutch rabbit, with the runny eye and nose, he did not respond to any antibiotic or benedryl, and we concluded it was a molar root impinging on the sinus.
Well, after coming home from the vet last week, boy, he was happy, eating, running etc, it was weird, one day we woke up, his sinus' stopped wheezing, but, he stopped eating. At the vet they gave us critical care in case he was in too much pain to eat, because his weight had gone down drastically. He seemed fine, until now, the runny's are back and very badly. He eats his greens, but it takes him two or three hours to do it, he WILL NOT eat any grass? I feel like it is too hard for him to swallow anything dry or solid, it also takes him a few hours to eat a tbs. of bunny basics. His throat sounds like it has a big blob in it. I put him in a seperate cage with a tent vaporizer, but the blob in his throat is still there, and his weight is not good. I need advice on how to get him to eat hay again, I know it is crucial to his GI system. Today I fed him some baby food, squash, but thought I'd write to you before starting critical care. He is so active and happy, but getting smaller, and the sinus getting pretty bad too. He seemingly can swallow those craisins though, like he'll never experience that kind of sweetness again, but then he starts choking a little bit, from eating them so fast, little rascal!

Answer
Dear Robin,

It sounds as if something very serious is going on here, such as an abscess or tumor deep in the back of the mouth, or possibly even in his throat.  I would strongly suggest that you enlist the help of another vet if the one you are now seeing is unable to diagnose the problem.  Check the listings here:

Ultrasound or even a CT scan might reveal a mass somewhere that is causing his problem.  And the sooner this is found and treated, the better your chance of saving his life. This sounds very serious, and I would waste no time in getting him the right diagnostic tests so proper treatment can be administered.  This might be antibiotics, or it might even be surgery. But if he cannot swallow properly, there is nothing you can do to help him at home.

I hope he will be fine soon.
