Bunny with a broken leg

Question
Hi, This afternoon, our bunny fell off the patio and we think that his leg is broken or he has a back injury, but it might be both. We want to take him to the vet but it's SO expensive, so we decided to just leave him at home for now, but since we can't take him to the vet, is there anything we can do to help heal him? He drags himself around his box with his front legs, and I googled it and it said then that means the bunny has a back injury, but one leg sticks out too, and it said, then your bunny must have broken it's foot. So can you please tell me what I should do right now and how to care for it? Thank you so much for your time! Please tell me ASAP! THANKS!

Answer
I'm sorry, but the only thing you can do for your bunny is take him to a vet.

He may have a back injury or a leg injury.  If he has a back injury, he may not have any control over his legs at all.  In any case, this may be extremely painful for him.  And there are other complications that can occur when a rabbit has problems with the back end not working properly.

I've had a rabbit with a back injury.  In my case, it was minor and some steroid injections lessened the symptoms.  But it still took a month for the rabbit to regain control of his lower body.  And even after that couldn't completely feel the lower parts of his back feet.  If you're lucky, maybe something like that has happened to your rabbit.

But since your rabbit is injured, your rabbit can't clean himself back there.  This means a greater chance of urine scald, and his poop and cecotropes sticking to his bottom.  You have to clean him, since he can't.  You'll also have to feed him his cecotropes so he gets the nutrition he needs from them.  He also won't be able to clean his ears and you will have to do that for him.

If he's in pain, that could cause him to stop eating.  If he stops eating, this can cause a nasty chain reaction and cause GI problems that could make him very sick or cause him to die.

But I really do recommend finding a vet.  Maybe you can find one that will work with you in terms of payment.  But there really isn't anything you can do to fix the injury, and this is a difficult injury to let try and heal on its own, if it even will.
