Disinfecting carpet for new rabbit

Question
Hi,
I recently lost my rabbit to Pasteurellose ( she was never tested but she was treated extensively for that disease ). I want ( ok, need...) a new rabbit but I would like to know how to disinfect the carpet where she was let loose and she most definitely peed and pooped a few times. How do I proceed ? What should I use ? Any suggestions ? Her old cage was a home made one so I simply destroyed it and I built a brand new one, her water bottle and feeding bowl were also thrown away as a precaution.
Thank you for any help you may provide,
the soon to be owner of a brand new rescue rabbit.

Answer
Naomi,  Pasteurella is highly contagious, so you are wise to be very cautious about cleaning your environment before bringing in a new bunny.  I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm grateful that you're willing to try again and give another bunny a wonderful new home!  Borax and white vinegar work beautifully for removing urine stains and killing the bacteria at the same time, take 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup Borax and 1/4 cup white vinegar and make a paste then work it into the stains and let dry.  Vaccum it up when it dries and that should take care of those areas.  To make sure the whole carpet is germ-free for your new bunny, you'll want to rent a steam-cleaner to clean it with.  The hot steam will kill the germs, and if you want added protection you can use a commercial cleaner in it too.  Your safest option was to get a new cage/water bottle/food dish which you've already done, so it sounds like you're almost ready!  Best wishes, and again I'm very sorry for your loss.
