Question
how do we know if our potbelly  pig has (Mange or SCABIES),because I am having some itching like crazy,we have had our pig for about 2 months ,she was born 2/13/11.my boys are not having any trouble,we have bath her and we keep her with lotion

Answer
Mange or Scabies is caused by tiny mites, invisible to the naked eye. A veterinarian can diagnose mange accurately by taking a skin scraping and studying it under a microscope. Clinical or visible symptoms of mange include itchy skin and orange skin under piggy's armpits, behind the ears or between the legs.

Swine mites can not live long unless they are on a pig. They will not infest people or other pets.

Treatment is two separate doses, two weeks apart. Mange mite eggs take about 2 weeks to hatch. The first dose of medicine kills all the living mites. The second dose kills any mites that may have hatched since the first dose.

Piglets tend to be itchy, even when they're covered with good lotion. The difference between ordinary piglet itchiness and mange or other skin problems is the orange "dirt", or large or thick peeling skin.
