Question

Jericho The Wonder Rat
Our rat, Jericho, for the past three days has been experiencing breathing problems, with gasping and wheezing, and blood coming from his nose.. we've been taking him to different vets who say they cant help because they know nothing about rats.. this morning we managed to find one.. but Jericho was really struggling to breathe. They  put him in an oxygen box and he is on two different anti-biotics.. they are keeping him there til he shows some sign of improvement, because they say he is very ill with pneumonia... what am I supposed to expect? What are their survival chances when diagnosed with this?
Thankyou for any advice you can give...

Answer
Hi Ashe

Thanks for the picture! I love rats that look like Jericho! I have three black rats just like him (one with only one eye, but hes still a tough guy!)
I am sorry he is sick but thankfully he is at the right place now getting treatment. I will be honest with you about this. I am not sure how old he is or if this is the first time he has been ill. If this is the first time he has been sick and he is healthy other wise, he has a good chance of pulling through this.  It also depends on the vet and the treatment he is getting.  He should be getting baytril and it should be dispensed through a nebulizer, and also gentocin or amakacin, along with albuterol.  These all should be dispensed through the nebulizer too. It gets the medication in the lungs faster.
It also depends on the bacteria causing the pneumonia. If it is from a secondary infection from mycoplasmosis, thats actually better news than if it is a strep bacteria causing the pneumonia.  So it all depends on different factors.  Mortality rat in a rat that is older and has had past problems before and has a weak immune system has about a 30% chance of survival.

A healthier rat, given the proper treatment has at least a 50-50 chance.
I wish I had better odds but keep positive. I would find out from the vets what meds they are using, and if they are using baytril and doxycycline, perhaps you can gently suggest the other meds to use, too.

Please let me know how old he is etc... and hang in there, keep the faith.
