Question

Amelie Rat
My Amelie rat is almost 3yrs old, has developed this tumor over the past few weeks. Her behavior hasn't changed very much, except that she acts increasingly aggressive toward a towel that I give her to chew on. She likes to chew on fabric much more than my other rat, Sesame. She practically attacks this old towel when I give it to her, but she interacts with me the same way she always has. I'm just wondering how to tell if she is in pain, and what I can do to make her life better if she is. thank you.

Answer
How long has she had this tumor?  This is more than a mammary tumor that could simply be removed by a qualified Veterinary surgeon with skills for treating exotic companion mammal animals, but it is not a nasty abscessed tumor that needs Veterinary attention right away to prevent her from developing sepsis (infection in the blood stream)

If you need the name of good vets in your area please let me know and I will gladly give you some names, no obligation of course.  The vet may elect NOT to remove the tumor because of her age, but it needs cleaned out, debrided and she needs oral antibiotics, possibly something for pain until this starts to heal.  Please let me know right away so you can help her feel better and continue to live a happy life with you!
