Rat bleeding

Question
Hi there and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I have had my rat "Luna" for about roughly 2 years now. She has never had a health problem at all but recently has developed a tumor just behind her elbow. Now I've read all about tumors in rats and know they are very common especially with old age.

The tumor is slowly but steadily growing. Luna can still walk around, run, eat, and groom reasonably comfortably.

But really soon I know I will have to take her to the vet to have her put down.

My question is. I noticed some bleeding when I had her out tonight and I looked her over and realized it was coming from her vulva. She still acted her usual self and was eating and drinking.

I did some research on that and suspect either a fibroid or urinary tract infection.

I was wondering if this was closely related to the tumor or just more problems associated with it being that she is older. I would like your thoughts on this matter in case I see it in any of my other ratties.

By the way, Luna has never produced a litter and has only lived with one other female rat.

Thank you so much!

Answer
Given the location, it's likely an estrogen based, benign tumor; so my assumption on the vaginal bleeding is that it's another issue associated with her age and a secondary infection, not related to the tumor at all. If a tumor is going to cause issues in the lower tracts, it's usually located further down the body/right around the groin area. I'm sorry your old girl isn't doing so well :( It's always hard to grapple with old age.
