Question

Dorian
one of my rats, Dorian, age 2yrs, recently became sullen and whimpery when pet. i noticed urethral inflammation and was off to my vet. Dorian had a large amount of prepuce plugging which was removed easily. we continue to remove small amounts daily. at first he was happier but he hates the biomox each 12 hrs, and we squirt erythromycin in his prepuce then as well. its been 2 days since his last dose of biomox but he has been hiding and cowering, seeming to dislike food and he seems lethargic and squinty. he's not acting healthy and we are very concerned! his brother bogart is fine. we feel attentive but helpless. what could we do?

Answer
Sometimes when this occurs, they may develop an infection and this could make him feel unwell.  Also, the medication can make him a bit lethargic too.  Have you tried to mix it with something yummy for him?  Baby food is a big hit when our ratties are sick. Often, a sick rat doesnt feel like chewing but would readily lick, so baby food seems to be the best thing to feed him if he isnt really showing interest in his regular foods.  Push the fluids, too. Try watermelon mashed up, see if he wants  to lick the watermelon juice.

One more thing to remember: Antibiotics usually start to show positive results in around 3 to 4 days. If he continues to feel sick or gets worse, he may need a different antibiotic.

He sure is beautiful, btw. What color is he?
