QuestionI recently (within a week) bought a baby rat, around 8 months old. I didn't notice anything odd when I purchased him. When I got home however, I noticed sneezing. I know that baby rats can sometimes go through nervous sneezing due to a environment change, so thats putting me at ease a little bit. But I would like to know. He has no discharge from the eyes or nose, when I listen to his tummy he sounds fine except for a slight squeak when he breaths. He eats and is active just like my adult male, which I quickly took away from the babies cage and into a different room. They were not in the same cage and the only interaction they had was a half hour or so in my bathtub a few days.
I am worried for the baby AND my other rat, I don't want either of them sick, let alone to die. Any advice?
AnswerWatch his symptoms. If they get worse in the next few days, he's legitimately sick and it isn't just a stressor reaction. If it gets better, you're probably fine. If he does get worse; you will need to see a vet and have him put on some medication (probably baytril, doxycycline or a more broad spectrum like trimethoprin), which will clear the symptoms up within 10 to 14 days. Don't stress much about it; respiratory problems are extremely common in rats, and when they're severely ill its VERY obvious. :)
