Question
Hello Sandra,
First and foremost THANKS for your time and energy in responding to all of us rat parents!  I spent a goodly amount of time reviewing many of your answers on why my Norton wasn't breathing very well.  The end result: I took him to the doc, together w/ a fairly extensive print-out on the details of microplasma.  Turns out that was a good idea as he isn't familiar w/ small animals, least of all, rats.  He used the info, prescribed some meds (baytril and dexo-something/steroid) and Norton's so much better now (2 days later) that I'm blown away.  This morning he was even enjoying his wheel (which he's never been crazy about... his buddy Ralph is the Master Wheeler)... guess it's the steroids.

Now my question/request: you'd mentioned that maybe someday you would video yourself giving one of your ratties some meds using a squirter.... might I have missed the link?  It would be most helpful as Norton's hardly finished w/ his meds and while I'm able to get some in his mouth, I wouldn't mind seeing how it's done ***well***.

Thanks again for all your help!
pj

Answer
Hi Patti

Good news that Norton is responding to his treatment.  I am not sure if you used my info on myco and its treatment or someone elses but it seems he was given a steroid such as Dexamethasone  which will help with inflammation of the lungs.

Meanwhile, you may have me confused with someone else on here. There is another Sandra, full name is Sandra Beasley, and although she is no longer answering questions and when she does she only answers 1 per day, her information is still available to read and she may have been the one to say she would video herself medicating the rat for everyone to see how it is done properly, it wasnt me.  I am too shy to video myself. :)

I am also lazy about medicating my rats. I will, however, do it properly  at the clinic (S) by giving it to them with a syringe placed in the side of their mouth and the medication usually tastes good that they reach up and hold on to the syringe themselves while I push the plunger down.  LOL  However, I have noted that restraining a sick rat only stresses them out so if you can find something palatable to mix with it, it is a better idea to let them lick it from a flat dish mixed with something tasty like a bit of strawberry jam or even melted chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream.  It is just a small amount and it will not hurt them and I have had alot of people write to me that have had rats struggle to no avail, spilling and wasting expensive medication and finally, adding some ice cream or yogurt etc...and they lick it right up and there is no stress and less mess!!
Anyhow, you probably have been reading back on some of Miss. Beasleys stuff too, but either way, she also has put out accurate and informative information as well.

Glad Norton is doing well!
