Suspected bumblefoot

Question
Hello,
I am from England & have been keeping rats for over 20years now. My oldest ratty is Squiblez just coming up to 2 and a half. She is Unfortunatly a fat rat, we diet her and she does lose weight but as she has 3 other cage mates at various ages it is sometimes hard for us to monitor what she eats from the various "stash" places. She is in good health but Friday night we noticed she was limping and this morning her back right foot is about 3 times the right size. I suspect it maybe bumblefoot, her foot looks like the photos at critter city website of other rats swollen feet.  Although she has no ulcer or cuts etc on the foot, her leg is ok & moves fine with no discomfort but she does squeak when her foot is touched.
Her weight being a factor & also we had to use woodchip bedding after our pet shop ran out of carefresh, this has now been resolved & we are back to soft bedding.
I'm going to take her to the vets 2moro, Monday.
My main question is as I'm in the UK what sort of meds do you think would be best to ask the vet for, they normally prescribe Baytril as the antibiotic but after reading & looking online this doesn't get a good review.
I am prepared to push the idea that it might be bumblefoot with my vet, they are good but Unfortunatly aren't experts in rats.

Answer
Sandra, who authored the Critter City website, is my friend, and my source for a lot of my own rattie information.  I trust her.  She had had rats all her life, more than 50 of them for sure.  I would definately refer you to her website any time.

Tell your vet that that it has been recommended to you that he prescribe Trimethoprim-sulfa (enought for at least 10 to 14 days of treatment).  If you see that your rat is in obvious pain, request that he prescribe Torbugesic as well, which a narcotic pain medication.

Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.  I hope that your baby Squiblez gets better soon (LOVE the name!)
