Snackers and Cavo I am a new rat owner and have had my three males for about 4 months now. They have mostly been in great health, just a few sniffles in the beginning, but recently my largest male rat's hair on his back end has started turning from a gray color to a rusty brown. It is not falling out or thinning, just changing color. Is this normal? He is the rat on the right in the attached photo and the grayish color on his head is about what all his non-white patches looked like.

Sometimes rats will do this. Its the change in pigment. Black rats actually can get brown patches and it is called "rusting"

I have to ask....what is that "mass" on the larger rats side? Is it just me or is there a large flesh colored lump on his side?
