Question
Hello, I have one cockatiel now and am wanting to get more, my cockatiel is kept in my bedroom however... and the others would be kept there too, I am wondering would three cocaktiels be very loud? do they screech to one another? this is the only sound other then hissing that my cockatiel makes, also my roommate has a cockatiel in the living room... they call back and forth to on another every now and then....would all the cockatiels call to the one in the living room?

Answer
Hello!

It all depends on your opinion of loud really. I have 8 'tiels upstairs in the breeding room right now that aren't making a peep. They can at times make quite a bit of noise, but I find that is mostly first thing in the morning and at night (dawn and dusk) and the rest of the day they are fairly "quiet". I think it also depends on whether you have males or females. Females tend to be quieter than males, but only make screeching sounds whereas males can learn some nice whistles, will mimic the birds outside and wolf whistle as well as screeching (although I find my males don't really screech as much). They are less likely to be very loud when housed in the same room, they will SEEM loud when they all get going at once contact calling the 'tiel in the living room. Would you consider keeping them all in the living room? That would cut down on the noise somewhay (seemingly).
I have babies in my room and all the breeders in their own room, and they do scream to each other.. its just part of their natural instincts to continually make contact calls to other parts of the flock to ensure they are safe and nearby. My cockatoo does the same thing when I leave the room or go upstairs, she starts to scream a bit to make sure I'm still around. She also contact calls to the Amazons upstairs!
Now if you can handle the noise from the two cockatiels calling back and forth to each other, then likely a little bit more noise won't make a big difference. The only time they really seem "loud" is when they're all screaming at once.
I hope I've helped some in your decision. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask here, or e-mail me here:
