Question
We have a 3 year old blue indian ring-necked parakeet that we have had for almost 18 months.  Claudius is tame and is handled daily by 3 family members, joins us for supper, sings and mimics noises and speech, and barks like the dog.  We have an opportunity to adopt an African Grey that is 3 years old and we would like to know if these two can be in the same house together.  The ring-neck has freedom of his cage area and hanging toys etc. and I wouldn't want to take that away.  I would also want the amazon to have the same freedoms after a settling in period and we are committed to the time and energy it will take to tame him. Will Claudius lose his tamed personality because of another bird in the house or will they learn to grow more tame together?

Answer
They should be fine in the same house, I have more than one bird in my house and I do not have problems. Do not show either of them affection in front of the other, that is the biggest mistake that bird owners make. This will make them jealous and they will hold a grudge. I would also, of course keep them in separate cages, but also on opposite sides of the room. Multiple bird families are common and there should not be a problem as long as you have education on your species and their behaviors. For example Indian Ringnecks are very territorial. I would just watch and make sure wings are clipped because I would not be surprised if at first Claudius goes after the new bird if she is flighted.
